A wind farm project in northern Custer County could affect the upcoming wheat harvest.

The company building those turbines wants to prevent that.

During Monday’s Custer County Board of Commissioner’s meeting, a representative from Invenergy said the company is hosting a meeting for local farmers next week to discuss the logistics of moving large equipment in the area, without disrupting both the construction project and the upcoming harvest.

The wind farm project, known as the Traverse wind farm, is a 999-megawatt infrastructure that is one of the three-part construction plan, dubbed the North Central Energy Facility, that includes the 199-megawatt Sundance wind farm in Woods, Major and Alfalfa counties – which began construction last fall – and the Maverick wind farm in Major County.

The Invenergy official said the meeting is 1 – 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at the Custer City Senior Center.

The goal is to speak with local wheat farmers, mainly those in and around Thomas, before harvest begins to discuss equipment logistics and avoid getting in each other’s way.

Those attending will be provided with maps.

The representative said they most likely will host another meeting once the next round of harvesting begins.
