A Clinton man received a felony charge last week in Custer County District Court after allegedly sending sexually graphic letters to two women.

According to court documents, 41-year-old Jason Dale Schmidt received one felony charge of transmitting a threatening letter after actually sending two similar letters to two women last September.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed last week, an investigator reviewed a report of a woman who received one of the letters that was described as being extremely graphic, vulgar and sexual in nature. The investigator would review a similar report from another woman a few days later.

It was noted that after investigating the two letters, the handwriting and verbiage were identical, indicating that the two letters came from the same person.

The affidavit went on to say that Schmidt became a suspect and was brought in for questioning in October. At first the suspect would acknowledge knowing both the women, but would deny sending the letters. After providing authorities a written statement, it was brought to Schmidt’s attention that his handwriting was very similar to the letters.

Schmidt would allegedly confess to writing and sending the letters a short time later, telling authorities that he had obtained one of the woman’s address from a church directory and had indeed written and sent both of the letters on the same day.

Schmidt appeared in court on April 16 for the charges. A preliminary hearing is set for Jun 18.
