An Elk City woman is accused of attempting to leave the scene of an accident that injured another driver.

According to a probable cause affidavit, 37-year-old Susan Rachelle Herring was formally charged in Beckham County District Court last week for her role in the accident that occurred on the evening of November 5.

The court document stated that the accident occurred at the intersection of West E Avenue and Boone Street in Elk City. According to multiple witnesses and the driver of the vehicle that was struck, the Chevrolet pickup driven by Herring was traveling at a high rate of speed, eastbound on West E Avenue. The truck would run the stop sign and strike the vehicle in the intersection as it attempted to head north on Boone Street. The collision caused the Herring vehicle to enter a yard in the 800 block of North Boone, coming to rest facing the south.

After speaking with witnesses, it was determined that the suspect had thrown two beers and a syringe over a fence – which police would later recover. Police would report that both cans of beer were cold to the touch with liquid still inside. Police would test the substance that was found in the syringe and report that it did test positive for methamphetamine.

Witnesses would also tell police that Herring attempted to leave the scene on foot, but she was stopped by on-lookers where they made her stay at the scene until police arrived.

Herring was arrested and transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center for treatment, and to have blood drawn to be sent to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for analysis. The victim in the hit vehicle was also transported to the hospital where it was determined that she had suffered a concussion in the accident.

Herring received multiple charges for her role in the accident including leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, transporting an opened container of intoxicating beverage, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license.

Herring’s first court appearance is scheduled for November 23.
