Distracted driving appears to be the cause of a six vehicle accident Sunday night on Interstate 40 in Beckham County.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, 21-year-old David Capps of Tahlequah was traveling east on I-40 near Sayre when he allegedly was looking at a cell phone and did not notice vehicles that had stopped due to another collision.

The report stated that Capps’ 2019 Ford van would hit a 2019 Toyota Camry occupied by a family of four from Virginia. The mishap would not injure the two adults and a teenager, however a 10-year-old boy was transported to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City and later transported to OU Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City with head and trunk internal injuries, last listed to be in critical condition.

The wreck would cause a chain reaction involving four more vehicles, and would send Elk City resident 20-year-old Kade Kennedy to Great Plains Regional Medical Center to have trunk internal injuries treated. He would later be released from the hospital.

The rest of the occupants of the vehicles were uninjured in the mishap.
