(Cody Canada and) The Departed - Adventus
Let's get down to brass tacks. "This is Indian Land" was decent. Don't get me wrong, it stays in my playlist. It's just that the whole album felt like a group of guys trying to find themselves musically. Personally it didn't sound like a cohesive piece featuring a singular unique sound from a singular, unique group of artists. I wholly appreciate what The Departed did with the album by covering several of their favorite Oklahoma bred tunes. It just felt like they were looking just as much as we were for what their sound is. You can't just ignore the elephant in the room with a big "CCR" tattoed on it's ass.
Fast forward to Adventus, and I do believe they've found themselves musically. From the first track, all the way through to the last, The Departed never let's up with blazing guitars, soulful organs, harmonicas dripping with the blues, and heartfelt lyrics telling the stories of a life hard lived. The album is made up of 14 stories that firmly establish The Departed as a force of it's own merrits. A great first album of originals from a group of phenominal musicians! Cheers to the future with The Departed!
