Oklahoma’s count of people with COVID-19 continued to skyrocket Friday as the state reported its second-biggest daily increase.

At least 359 new cases of COVID-19 were reported one day after Thursday’s report of 450 new cases, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health. There are currently 2,127 active cases of COVID-19 in the state.

Health officials also reported an additional 141 recoveries as well. Overall, 7,212 people have recovered from the virus.

There are currently 211 hospitalizations being reported and one new COVID-19 fatality. The death toll in the state is currently at 367.

Locally Custer County is down three active cases, now with eight. Jackson County has four active cases. Greer, Kiowa, and Washita Counties all have two active cases each while Beckham County has one active case.

Tulsa County, Oklahoma’s second-most populous, continued to set the pace for the state’s new cases with 125 on Friday. The county currently has 721 active cases.

The new wave comes amid ongoing demonstrations to protest police killings of black citizens, and Friday’s Juneteenth celebrations.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up within weeks. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the highly contagious virus can cause severe symptoms and be fatal.
