Elk City Schools Superintendent Rick Garrison reacts to yesterday’s announcement made by the State School Board of canceling classes throughout the state until April 6 to help limit the spread of the coronavirus. Garrison says he supports the board and State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister’s decision. He says locally, the district will still be a service to the community after spring break.

Garrison said the district, like other districts in the area, is still evaluating how to distribute food to students that rely on breakfast and lunch programs.

Garrison also says end of the year testing and how to proceed once school resumes will also need to be addressed.

As far as making up dates missed, it was announced yesterday by the State School Board that schools will not be required to make up the days missed during the state-mandated closure. The board is expected to meet again this month and is expected to approve instructional time waivers so schools will not be required to make up the missed days.
