Elk City officials have announced that some city facilities will be closed and certain scheduled events have been postponed until April 4, due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

City Manager Lee Litterell says city officials made the decision based on the recent state of emergency declaration issued by Governor Kevin Stitt. Litterell says officials will meet again before April 4 to reassess the situation, and discuss if there is a need to extend the closings.

City officials say city-owned facilities to be temporarily closed will be the Elk City National Route 66 Museum Complex, Elk City Convention Center, Elk City Carnegie Hall, Elk City Gathering Place, Elk City Boy Scout and Girl Scout Building, and all baseball and softball fields.

City officials also say all events scheduled on city properties that are canceled include Kids Inc. soccer league games and practices, the Elk City Chamber of Commerce Carnival in Ackley Park West and the Tumbleweed Quilting Retreat at the Elk City Convention Center.

Litterell also said that at this time, city commissioners meetings will continue, and be open to the public.

The Elk City City Commission is scheduled to meet tomorrow in regular session at 2pm.

The city has also announced that municipal court proceedings have been canceled for the next three weeks. City officials say that if anyone is scheduled for Elk City Municipal Court on March 19, March 26, or April 2, to contact the Municipal Court Clerk at 580-225-4653 to reschedule your court appearance. Elk City Municipal Court is scheduled to resume on April 9.

Elsewhere, Custer County Sheriff Kenneth Tidwell announced today that he has ordered the cancellation of public visitation and the suspension of all non-essential personnel from entering the Custer County Detention Center until further notice. In addition, the Sheriff also announced the suspension of the processing of all handgun licensing applications that require fingerprinting, along with all other fingerprinting services, all in an effort to prevent the introduction of COVID-19.
