A multi-car pile up on Interstate 40 in Caddo County Monday afternoon has sent two to the hospital, and forced officials to shut down a portion of the interstate.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the accident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near the 100 mile marker when three vehicles had come to a stop in the inside lane due to a disabled vehicle. That’s when a semi driven by 58-year-old Timothy Clemons struck the vehicle occupied by 20-year-old Rae Darrow from behind. This caused the Darrow vehicle to strike the vehicle ahead of it, occupied by 74-year-old Patricia Shelby, and 50-year-old Bobby Hicks. During the collision the Darrow vehicle overturned and came to rest on its drivers side against the cable barrier. The force of the collision caused the Shelby vehicle to strike the vehicle ahead of it occupied by 22-year-old Carsi Newton, who was not injured.

The driver of the semi along with a passenger were uninjured in the accident. However both Darrow and Shelby were admitted to an Oklahoma City hospital, last listed to be in critical condition.

OHP had to divert traffic off of the eastbound lanes of the interstate for nearly 3 and a half hours.
