A SWOSU student from Hydro has received a top honor.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University student Alexis Ann Schroeder has been named the 2016-2017 Paula Jeanne Horsburgh Memorial Scholar by the SWOSU Foundation, Inc., in Weatherford.

Schroeder is a biological science major with a minor in chemistry. In addition to attending her classes as a full-time SWOSU student, Schroeder operates a foster horse rescue and rehabilitation program and is active in serving others through her church.

In congratulating her, SWOSU Foundation Executive Director Garrett King says Schroeder’s passion for learning, her demonstrated care for animals, and her heart for service all echo the many, many wonderful attributes of Paula Jeanne Horsburgh.

King says the SWOSU Foundation is honored that the Horsburgh family has generously made possible the scholarship possible for students at Horsburgh’s alma mater.

Horsburgh was born on October 22, 1944, in Pittsburgh (PA); she passed away on December 31, 2014.

In 1973, she and her husband, Jim, moved to Weatherford, where they made their home and raised their two children.

Paula had a rich history at SWOSU, earning both a B.A. in Sociology in 1979 and an M.A. in Education in 1992 from SWOSU; her husband, Jim, served as an instructor in the then-SWOSU School of Business Finance from 1973-1978.

She touched the lives of many different SWOSU students over the years.

The SWOSU Foundation was established in 1977 to promote philanthropy and distribute funds to support the activities and programs of SWOSU.
