About another six weeks of road work exits in Elk City as contracted crews finish up south Main Street.

Some travelers have questioned why the roadway has gotten worse instead of better as ODOT crews work on the section of the street that’s also called Highway 6.

Brent Olmquist – ODOT’s Division Engineer for District 5 says hang in there, it will be very smooth before the contracted crews are finished.

Olmquist says it’s a $1.9 million-dollar project and covers the area on both sides of the bridge over the interstate.

He’s telling travelers to be patient for a little while longer.

According to the latest traffic count, approximately 75-hundred vehicles travel this section of Main Street every day as the construction impacts a number of drivers as the divided road is diverted into one-lane traffic, each way.

As for the work that began Tuesday, May 31, the rehabilitation should get rid of the bumps that travelers experience both north and south of the Highway 6 bridge over the Interstate.

Olmquist says the roadway will continue to remain open, but not so in 2018 when the Highway 6 bridge over the interstate will be totally reconstructed, a project of about $6-million dollars.
