Two people from Mangum are in two different Oklahoma City hospitals in serious condition recuperating from injuries sustained in the same car accident.

54-year-old Steven Hughes was first sent to Quartz Mountain Medical Center in Mangum and later air transported to Mercy Medical Center in OKC with internal injuries suffered in the Tuesday evening wreck in Greer County.

A passenger in the 2006 Chevy that Hughes was driving, 39-year-old Christi Heider was also sent to Quartz Mountain, but later transferred by air support to OU Medical Center where she arrived with internal injuries, as well.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, the Chevy was west bound on U.S. Highway 283 around 7:42 pm when Hughes ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a ditch.

The report says Hughes was apparently sleepy and the cause of the accident was inattentive driving.

The accident happened about three miles east of Mangum in Greer County.

Neither the driver nor passenger was wearing a seatbelt.
